  1. Philographics: Big ideas in simple shapes

    image

A series of 95 beautiful designs explaining philosophy using simple colors and shapes, available as a postcard box and a book.

Conceived by London designer Genis Carreras, this appeals to the science communicator in me. A sort of visual version of Sophie’s World.

In fact, it’s the first Kickstarter project I’ve backed.

Remember Nick Gentry and his floppy disk portraits? In his latest exhibition, he’s swapped the floppy disks for vintage 35 mm film negatives and x-rays backlit with LED strips.

  3. Visiting Tessa Rose Jackson’s site, I liked the visuals. The’re made by Utrecht graphical artist/designer Lennart Wolfert. Ik like the playful vintage-like typography and judging from some of his work for musicians, we overlap in musical taste.

  4. Visualizing Big Data, Aaron Koblin succeeds in adding an aesthetic component to otherwise oblique sets of data. He also shows that involvement plays a major role in the way a final product takes shape (HAL’s song vs. the Johnny Cash Project).

  5. Mumford and Sons @ Amsterdam Ziggo Dome yesterday. If you’re wondering about the empty hall; this is what a soundcheck-party looks like. More photos soon in MusicMaker Magazine.

  6. Found this via TEDxAmsterdam.

Recently released after being solely available on the NASA website, this video bundles time-lapse photographs taken by astronauts on board the ISS (edited by Bruce W. Berry).

What’s to see? The flimsyness of our atmosphere. The eruption of the Sarychev volcano, Aurora Borealis from Central America and the Atlantic Ocean, city lights over the Middle East and Europe as well as the Milky Way and storms over Africa. Not all light is man-made; I think the lightning and Aurora(’s?) are most captivating.

  9. This well-written piece on The Verge states that, though FB is still nowhere near where Myspace went, it is losing it’s ‘cool’ factor.

Doug Perrine captured these stunning photographs in the Maldives. The particular location (Vaadhoo Island) has a concentrated population of bioluminescent phytoplankton. Bioluminescence is a natural chemical reaction which occurs when a micro-organism in the water reacts with oxygen. When washed ashore by the tides, the phytoplankton’s chemical energy is turned into light energy, illuminating the waves.
